IPs meet to preserve ancestral domain

MAASIM, Sarangani (April 14, 2016) – A tribal leaders’ consultative meeting is held April 7 at Nomoh Barangay Hall together with personnel from National Commission on Indigenous Peoples. The main purpose of the meeting is to organize the ancestral domain claim by the indigenous peoples headed by Municipal Tribal Chieftain Datu Fulung Benjamin Donato as head petitioner and Barangay Captain Luna Tabalao, co-petitioner, for the whole scope areas of more than 5,000 hectares exclusively in Barangay Nomoh inhabited by 100% Tboli tribe since time immemorial. Nomoh Tboli Ancestral Domain Association is the name approved by the tribal groups during the meeting. More than 70 participants came from far flung sitios. Donato said, as provincial assessor, one of the main problems in Sarangani today is the diminishing area of ancestral domain of the indigenous peoples (IP) due to rampant land selling to non IPs and fake claimants of the ancestral domain despite the fact it is prohibited.
