ALABEL, Sarangani (July 10, 2017) - Jonathan Niones (standing), chief science research specialist of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PRRI), presents to Sarangani Provincial Tribal Council (SPTC) officers on July 6 at Capitol conference room the project entitled Profiling and Seed Purification/Multiplication of Selected Traditional Varieties (TRVs) in Support of the Department of Agriculture’s Initiative for Exporting Quality Rice. The project aims to collect TRVs and characterize their morphological phenotype, grain quality, pest/disease resistance and DNA fingerprinting at PRRI, Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija. Sarangani Province has more than 100 Traditional Upland Rice varieties in the indigenous people’s communities as per results of research conducted by the Mindanao State University (MSU) in General Santos City. As required under RA 8371 known as Indigenous Peoples Right Acts (IPRA) Law, any project that would affect the interest of the indigenous peoples must have to ask permission from the tribal leaders if they allow it or not.
