MALAPATAN, Sarangani (September 13, 2017) - Blaan mat weaver Fu Nena T. Talino, 75, from Upper Lasang, shows on September 8 her beautiful “Sigo-sigo” (elbow) mat design which took her one month to finish the one whole piece of mat. The gradual vanishing of the cultural tradition of Blaan mat weaving led the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) to be alarmed that such indigenous skills and treasure would be lost. The School of Living Tradition (SLT) on mat weaving was implemented under the Sulong Tribu program of Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon for the resurgence of one of the important parts of the Blaan culture. Upper Lasang is the home of 75 year old Estelita Tumandan Bantilan (background) who was conferred the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the National Living Treasures Award on mat weaving by President Rodrigo Duterte thru the endorsement of NCCA.
