Mayor Tessa, DSWD give cash gifts to Malungon centenarians

MALUNGON, Sarangani (June 14, 2017) – Four centenarian residents here have each received P100,000 cash gift from the government.

Sarao Lavena Banes, regional focal person on social pension of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), said the release of P400,000 to Tinglo Tali, 107 years old; Teodolfo Conception, 103; Maria Palomo, 103; and Rofu Alipoyo, 102, of Barangays JP Laurel, Datal Batong, Upper Biangan and Poblacion, respectively, was part of the newly approved mandates that are being specified under R.A. 10868.

R.A. 10868, otherwise known as the Centenarian Act of 2016, directs for centenarians here in the country and abroad to receive P100,000 after reaching the century old age.

The implementing rules and regulations for R.A. 10868 have taken effect after being jointly signed by Social Welfare Sec. Judy Taguiwalo, Health Sec. Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial, and Interior Sec. Ismael Sueno on September 26 last year.

The centenarians, all accompanied by close relatives and Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) members from their respective barangays, received the cash gifts that were coupled with candle lighted cakes from Mayor Maria Theresa D. Constantino at the Municipal Hall.

Constantino, during the release, made clear that the cash gift will be purely intended for the use, food supplies and medical maintenance of the beneficiaries and not for distribution to relatives for their own personal benefit.

“Ini ginhatag sang atong gobyerno para sa aton nga mga sentenariong mga katigulangan. Gani gusto ko lang klaruhon kag ipaabut sa tanan nga ini nga bulig indi para sa mga anak kag mga kaparyentehan nga ila pagatunga-tungaon para sa ila personal nga mga kinahanglanon (I merely wanted to make clear that these government-initiated assistance will be purely used for our centenarians and not for their children and close relatives to share and divide for their personal use and advantage),” Constantino said.

In an interview, Yolando Pabualan, head of the local Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA), also extended gratitude for all the well-appreciated concerns and financial backing of the Constantino-run government, specifically in the dispersion of the assistance for the elderly.

The distribution of cash gifts was witnessed by Tita Campana, head of the regional social pension unit; May Francis Aquino of PSWDO; Ruth Arangote, OIC of the MSWDO; Vice Mayor Mariano Escalada Jr.; members of the Sangguniang Bayan and a number of ABC members headed by their Liga president, Nagpan Brgy. Capt. Edna Tuanzon.

Meanwhile, DSWD officials said the nearest surviving relative of a deceased centenarian, will also be bestowed with a posthumous plaque of recognition in honor of their centenarian relative. (Sen Cuayson and Von Dela Cuesta /MALUNGON INFORMATION OFFICE)
