3 doctors, 2 CPAs, Cum Laudes among 588 PPSS graduate-scholars

ALABEL, Sarangani (March 15, 2019) - Some 588 poor but deserving students have graduated under the Paaral Para Sa Sarangan (PPSS) scholarship program.

Among them were three medical doctors, two Certified Public Accountants, four licensed nurses, 10 licensed midwives and at least 87 LET (Licensure Exam for Teachers) passers who graduated in recent years.

A total of P10 million have been allotted for the PPSS scholarship program in 2019.

The Sulong Karunungan program of Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon, with the support of Senator Manny Pacquiao, Congressman Ruel Pacquiao and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, has been strengthening PPSS to help the less fortunate and deserving students.

A student can be a PPSS scholar by passing the qualification requirement, scholarship exam, ranking, and interview. This year, PPSS will increase its coverage due to some who cannot meet the scores and requirements. There will be additional component for them to pass. Also, PPSS will now cater to elementary and high school especially in far flung areas.

“I’m encouraging lalo na yung mga senior high school students na igihan yung pag-aaral, give your best kasi kung mataas yung academic performance, they can access scholarships,” said Glenda Revaño, PPSS program coordinator.

As of June 2018, for the first school semester, there are 444 PPSS scholars who benefitted from this program. There are already 301 scholars for private school, 33 in state universities, plus 77 new scholars in private school and 19 in state universities. All of them received tuition and book allowance per month.

Moreover, 14 new scholars for pilot batch of K12 have been chosen to receive full scholarship program and will receive P2,500 for book allowance, and P3,000 per month for tuition and stipend.

The PPSS scholarship program was established in 2002 under the governance of Atty. Miguel Escobar. It was sustained from 2004 to 2013 by then Governor Migs Dominguez and continued by incumbent Governor Solon. Since then, 588 scholars have successfully graduated with the help of PPSS up to 2018. Out of those, there were 3 Magna Cum Laudes and 28 Cum Laudes.

The main objective of PPSS is to help poor but deserving Sarangan students who pursue technical, vocational or baccalaureate courses. (Donna Mahusay/SARANGANI COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE)
