Brighter future for Sarangani – Governor Solon

ALABEL, Sarangani (June 27, 2016) – “Sarangani, we are destined for greatness.” This was the bold statement of Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon stirring up momentum for development initiatives as he took Wednesday (June 22) his oath of office for a second term.

The governor was sworn in with Senator-elect Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, Congressman-elect Ruel Pacquiao and other local officials from Sarangani and General Santos City in the presence of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.

Governor Solon’s remarks came ahead of the arrival of Duterte who delivered his speech during the historic event, "Convergence: The Inaugural Ceremony of a United Sarangani and General Santos".

It was Duterte’s second visit to Sarangani. On November 27, 2015, Duterte delivered a speech in the same venue during the Munato Festival and 23rd Foundation Anniversary of Sarangani a few hours after his lawyer filed his certificate of candidacy for president in Intramuros.

In that speech, the Davao City mayor vowed that he will build a law-abiding, God-fearing and comfortable nation if elected president. Duterte also said that “corruption has to stop” and “criminality has to go.” He made it clear he would not change his ways in dealing with drug dealers and criminals.

Duterte, who had anchored his campaign on the fight against corruption, criminality, and illegal drugs, reiterated these during the Convergence before thousands of local officials and their families.

“I promised to the people and I will do it. I put at stake my life, my honor, and even the presidency itself,” Duterte told the crowd.

Solon infused in his speech reports of internationally and nationally-acclaimed awards conferred to Sarangani in the past two years but paid more interest into the future of the province with a new President and Senator both from Mindanao.

Solon already anticipated the imminent “huge wave of development” and urged his constituents to ascertain that they are able of absorbing these.

Through the years, he said, Sarangani has “grown in stature” but acknowledging alongside with it the room for improvement as “long and wide.”

Solon, however, said he is confident on the ability of his people “as a united Sarangani to close in this gap” considering the resiliency and their willingness to “sacrifice for a better future.”

He also pointed out the importance of teamwork in maximizing the benefits of development in Mindanao and Sarangani by “limiting the leakages and allowing development to penetrate to every purok and sitio.”

When Solon assumed as governor in 2013, he conceptualized the Sulong Sarangani Program that paved the way for the convergence of all poverty reduction measures and other resources through evidence-based actions.

Recently the governor has been prodding project implementers and Capitol departments for a momentum on all Sulong Sarangani activities. (Beverly C. Paoyon /SARANGANI INFORMATION OFFICE)
