Tribes hold ‘Damsu’ rite for P120-M Mahklok bridge, road project
MALUNGON, Sarangani (September 10, 2020) - Tribal Chieftain and Barangay Councilor Joel Corante officiates a Blaan tribe ritual called ‘Damsu,’ with close participation of Mayor Tessa D. Constantino, as the latter precedes the official start of the P120-million DPWH-funded road and bridge construction on Mahklok River, Barangay Blaan on September 4. The ‘Damsu’ is a Blaan term that means offering to pay respect to the tribal culture and tradition. This is usually mated with the wearing of native-inspired colorful garments, and the dancing and singing of tribal songs in the midst of any considered sacred chants and special gathering. Constantino gave heartfelt thanks to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte for the ‘Build-Build-Build’ project that aims at accelerating the construction of infrastructure projects; through the collaborative efforts of Senator Emmanuel D. Pacquiao, Congressman Ruel D. Pacquiao, the Provincial Government headed by Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon, and the Local Government Unit for taking part in the materialization of this longtime most dreamed of government project of the tribal people. For Blaan Barangay Capt. Sweety Mae Galang-Laguerder, the project construction and all the string of beneficial project implementation to boost the existing living status of the IPs in the town’s most isolated and distant villages is like an answered prayer. “As leader of an IP-dominated barangay, they (Blaan tribe) now deeply feel and understand the love and caring hands of the government that currently provide even the far flung sitios, with various infrastructure and other upcoming projects. Especially this bridge, nga sa pila ka mga tinuig, madamu na ang nalunod, natumba nga motor kag na-stranded kung kusog kayo ang ulan,” Constantino said in a mixed vernacular. The event was also attended by all the tribal chieftains from the southern district, representing their respective barangays that will also traverse the area. (MALUNGON INFORMATION OFFICE)
