Sarangani student composed Brigada Eskwela 2020 national jingle

ALABEL, Sarangani (June 19, 2020) – The provincial government of Sarangani has lauded Vinz Abcde Betonio, a senior high school student of James L. Chiongbian National Trade School in barangay Kling, Kiamba, for a national award he brought for the province and the region.

Betonio won the grand prize, besting 16 entries from other regions, in the nationwide Brigada Eskwela 2020 Jingle Composition Contest of the Department of Education dubbed as “Pagpapanatili ng Bayanihan Tungo sa Kalidad na Edukasyon para sa Kabataan.”

Through Resolution 2020-10-046 introduced by Board Member Jess Bascuña and passed by the 10th Sangguniang Panlalawigan, Betonio and his coach, Rodel Rubia, were given recognition during the 17th Regular Session on June 16. The duo also received cash incentives of P10,000 for Betonio and P5,000 for Rubia. Rubia is Betonio’s Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health teacher.

In the resolution, Sarangani Province expressed its profound recognition for the achievement of Betonio that brought honor and pride not only to the schools division of Sarangani but also to the provincial government.

Prior to the national competition, Betonio’s song entry topped the division level and eventually bested other division entries in the regional level contest on March 4 and became the official entry of Region XII in the national contest.

DepEd launched the nationwide jingle writing competition to come up with a campaign jingle that will be used in the 2020 Brigada Eskwela marketing and advocacy activities. It was participated in by all elementary and secondary public schools throughout the country.

Betonio’s winning piece entitled “Magbayanihan Na” ( which he wrote and performed himself, is now used as DepEd’s official Brigada Eskwela Jingle for 2020.

Brigada Eskwela or the National Schools Maintenance Week is a nationwide initiative by DepEd that mobilizes thousands of parents, alumni, civic groups, local businesses, non-government organizations, teachers, students, and individuals who volunteer their time and skills to do repairs, maintenance work, and clean-up of public elementary and secondary schools.

This year’s Brigada Eskwela aims to involve the community and stakeholders in preparing the schools for the incoming school year amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

Betonio and Rubia had received a cash prize of P30,000, medals and a plaque of recognition from the office of Education Secretary Leonor Briones.

“I feel overwhelmed. It is my pleasure na makabigay ng pride sa Sarangani and syempre hindi ko naman inaangkin lahat kasi kasama ko si Sir Rodel sa achievement natin ng buong Sarangani,” said Betonio.

Betonio humbly claimed “music runs in the blood” and said his family has been his primary inspiration in writing the song.

Aside from being musically-inclined, Betonio has also been exceeding in academics as he has been participating and winning in the Regional and National Schools Press Conference.

“Si Vinz kumbaga isa siya ka gem sa Sarangani. Para sa ako, kung naa ta’y mga bata nga sama niana, more pa nato suportahan ug i-boost ang ilang confidence para makahatag ug dungog sa atong probinsya,” said Coach Rubia. (Jori Mae R. Samillano/SARANGANI PROVINCIAL INFORMATION OFFICE)
